On behalf of the Grassroots Sports Club Committee, The Mirabel Foundation and Mirabel families and children, thank you to those who attended the 2022 GSC Spring Racing Lunch on Friday 7th October. When it comes to racing the names don’t get bigger than Damien Oliver and Jamie Kah. The best male and female Jockeys Australian has ever produced were our guests and they didn’t disappoint.

Damien Oliver, an eleven-time Scobie Breasley Medal winner and member of racing’s Hall of Fame spoke about his career and triumphs in racing that have included winning the Melbourne Cup (three times), Caulfield Cup (4), Cox Plate (2) and Golden Slipper. Damien talked us through his solid book of rides in the upcoming carnival and suggested a couple we should follow closely.

Jamie Kah, currently the world's top-ranked female jockey, is on fire and we were lucky to have her come and speak.  Fast Kah spoke about her outstanding season in 2020/21 when she became the first jockey to ride 100 winners in a Melbourne Metropolitan racing season riding a total of 105 winners. Her career so far has produced 6 Group 1 winners with undoubtably more to come.

As usual our master of ceremonies Jason Richardson kept us entertained through roving richo, stand up sit down and our time honoured table draw. The event took an unexpected turn as guest Warren Smith was invited to the stage for his performance of "The Greatest Race of All". A song he has written about the Melbourne cup.

Due to the enormous generosity of those in attendance the day was a huge success raising $85,000 to support disadvantaged children access sport and recreation. This is an outstanding result and these funds will make a huge difference to Mirabel children.

Thanks to all of the Grassroots Sports Club community including our sponsors Spicer Thoroughbreds, Coldstream Brewery, Melbourne Racing Club, Warakirri and Lion.
