With round 1 done and dusted the Grassroots Sports Club AFL lunch was perfectly timed. Footy is back and we want to celebrate. The room at Zinc looked sensational as 310 guests arrived to a live performance from Things of Stone and Wood front man Greg Arnold. The beer, cider and wine flowed, the food was delicious and the entertainment was spot on.

Matty Campbell greeted a packed room of guests which included AFL greats Russell Greene,  John Barnes,  Clint Bizzell, Kane Pettifer and David Glascott.  AFL CEO Gil McLachlan was happy to share his thoughts on the upcoming season although Matty Campbell could not get any information on who Gils successor may be. Before hearing from our guest speakers GSC Committee Member Daniel Clohesy spoke with Jacob Darkin a young man who had a long association with the Mirabel Foundation having attended many of their camps and activities. Jacobs story was a remarkable example of resilience and overcoming adversity. It really highlighted  the importance of Mirabel’s programs and GSC fundraising.

Carlton champion Anthony Koutoufides is undoubtably one of the best footballers of his generation. He is also one of the funniest speakers we have had at the grassroots. Kouta had the crowd laughing along to stories about attending the Brownlow, playing in premierships, being named in the Italian and Greek AFL teams of the century and winning Dancing with the Stars.

Tom Boyd is a unique footballer with a unique story to tell and he told it well. Tom spoke about being drafted number 1, contract negotiations, the weight of expectations and mental health. His role in Western Bulldogs first premiership in 60 years is undisputed and Bulldogs fan Matty Campbell loved reliving this story with Tom.

The Grassroots Sports Club continues to go from strength to strength due to the support of everyone who attend along with our fantastic sponsors Lion, MRC Foundation, Spicer Thoroughbreds, Jagger Watches,  Warakirri, SCM Financial Group, Coldstream Brewery, AFL, Bass and Flinders Distillery and Micador.
