This was a lunch for the ages. The GSC “Thanks a Million Lunch” was a celebration of the incredible achievement that the GSC and its supporters had raised in excess of $1 million dollars to assist disadvantaged kids access sport and recreation. After only being able to hold one event since 2019 this lunch had it all – footy, racing and comedy enjoyed over a great meal and a cold furphy.

Former AFL player and Racing.com presenter Matty Campbell took the reigns as MC and did a great job ensuring we raised much needed funds and keeping the crowd under control. Nick Riewoldt was a generous speaker and walked us through his stellar career as St Kilda Captain and champion. His work with the charity Maddie’s Vision and efforts to get a Tasmanian team in the AFL dominate his time these days along with a media career and winning Celebrity Masterchef earlier this year. He even talked about chicken consume and his signature scallop pies while critiquing the food served at the event.

Group 1 winning trainer Lindsey Smith came across from Warnambool and had the crowd laughing at his exploits winning some big races, sending horses to Albany, betting plunges in Perth and his transition to the Bool. Along with Brad Spicer he generously donated a share in a horse that was auctioned later in the day.

After a hugely successful table draw (won by the MRC table), raffle and auction GSC favourite and Mirabel supporter comedian Lawrence Mooney had the crowd in fits of laughter in a hilarious finale to an amazing day. The moon man never fails to deliver.

The GSC began with humble beginnings a small lunch attended by 87 people raised $2800. At the “Thanks a million lunch” we had 256 guests, celebrated raising $1 million and added an additional $87600. Our most successful fundraising event to date.

Thanks, as always to our corporate sponsors Coldstream Brewery, Spicer Thoroughbreds, Warikiri, Liberty Finance, MRC foundation, Furphy and ACRD.

We are well on our way to the next million.
